The club gets some time with Miss Nalinda Deborah Nkwanzi, the “Enkwanzi Za Tooro” (translating to precious beads) a Journalist who also has a knack for marketing and sales. She proudly stands for Mental Health for the youth mainly based off a personal experience and a deep love for the wellbeing of her country’s youth. We get to know a bit more about her in the #7QuestionsWithHer segment.

1. Can you tell us what inspired you to focus on advocating for the mental health of youth?
Personally, I have experienced a mental health disorder, specifically depression, which was severe enough that I had to meet with a school psychiatrist during my time in high school at Baptist Kitebi. As I grew older, I realized that I was not alone in this struggle. Many people face similar challenges but find it difficult to come forward and admit what they are going through, often because they believe they won’t receive the help they need. This realization inspired me to advocate for mental health awareness and support, as I want to ensure that others do not feel as isolated and helpless as I once did.
Actually in Uganda, mental health issues are a big concern. About 14 million Ugandans, which is nearly 35% of our population, experience some form of mental disorder, according to the Ministry of Health. Depression and anxiety are especially common among young people. Unfortunately, mental health conditions often go untreated because there aren’t enough resources and there’s a lot of stigma around the topic. Cultural beliefs and misconceptions about mental illness also make it harder for people to seek help.
2. How has your background in journalism influenced your approach to raising awareness about mental health issues among young people?
My background in journalism has taught me how to express myself confidently through public speaking, which is a crucial step in creating awareness. Being able to communicate effectively and share stories in a compelling way has allowed me to reach a broader audience and educate them about mental health issues. This skill has been instrumental in my advocacy work, enabling me to connect with people and provide them with the information and encouragement they need.
3. What are some of the key challenges you have encountered while working on mental health advocacy, and how have you addressed them?
One of the most significant challenges I have encountered is convincing people to talk about their mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Many people are reluctant to discuss these issues due to the stigma and fear of being misunderstood or judged. To address these challenges, I focus on giving mental health sufferers the time and space to try and understand what they are going through. Creating a safe and supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable sharing their experiences is essential in overcoming these barriers.
4. As a contestant in Miss Africa Unite, how do you plan to leverage this platform to further your cause for youth mental health?
Social media has been a powerful tool in reaching many people who need help and those who desire to hear a positive message. I plan to continue using my platforms to provide hope and support to those secretly going through tough times and have no one to talk to. By sharing my experiences and encouraging open conversations about mental health, I aim to let people know that it’s okay not to be okay sometimes. My goal is to use the visibility and reach of Miss Africa Unite to amplify this message and connect with even more individuals who need support.

5. Can you share a particularly impactful story or experience from your advocacy work that has motivated you to keep pushing forward?
Reflecting on my own survival from the dangers of depression has been particularly impactful. By not succumbing to negative emotions, opening up to others, seeking help, and staying committed and rooted in the word of God, I have managed to overcome significant challenges. This personal victory reinforces my belief that there is nothing that cannot be defeated with the right support and mindset. Knowing that my journey can inspire and give hope to others motivates me to continue my advocacy work.
6. What initiatives or programs have you implemented or are planning to implement to support the mental health of youth?
I have been involved in visiting health facilities to connect with people facing mental illness and offering them support. Additionally, I plan to visit schools, especially where I studied, to talk to students about how to curb mental health issues. These initiatives aim to provide direct support and education to those in need, helping them understand and manage their mental health better.
7. How can the Ugandan community and individuals contribute to and support your efforts in promoting mental health awareness and support for young people?
Welcoming me and my initiatives would definitely be the most helpful support I could receive from my people. By embracing my advocacy work and participating in the programs and discussions, Ugandans can contribute to a broader movement of mental health awareness and support. This collective effort is crucial in creating a more understanding and supportive environment for those struggling with mental health issues in our country and beyond.
